In his tenacious and productive projects with HeleH, Ponti paid attention to two main types of approach to the design of handles. Each type had its own special characteristic. To be more precise, one was organic, where the lever is determined by the shape of the handgrip, which is embillished by sinously element. Meanwhile, the source of inspiration of the other stemmed from geometric purity, in regards to which the hand naturally adapts to the shape. The characteristic of the former therefore resulted in independent forms which are more expressive and strongly affected by ergonomic requirements.
The latter brought Ponti to the path of linear and coordinated shapes that chase the harmonic relationship between the setting and its logical legiblity. He continued following this line he was designing a handle for Pirelli skyscraper in Milan..
As a result, Lama was created as a condensation of his vision in which classical symbolism prevails over functionlism.
Lama’shape has its origins from a blade ( lama in Italian), accordingly, the lever is thin and particularly compact, therefore, giving us a pleasant handgrip at once.
